On April 16, 2017, the 7th Beijing International Film Festival successfully kicked off in Beijing. The main competition for “Tiantan Award”, a highlight of the Festival organized by BFA, attracted extensive attention. Apart from organizing and arranging the review and decision of award, BFA held a series of relevant activities to promote the positive interaction between the international filmmakers and the new force in the Chinese film industry. On the evening of April 19, 2017, the “Beijing International Film Festival Jury President’s Film Screening & Interaction —Dialogue with the Danish National Film Master”, co-organized by the Internationa School and Office of Academic Affairs of BFA, was held at BFA Standard Screening Room.
The activity was presided over by Sun Xin – Dean of the International School of BFA. Mr. Bille August, the President of “Tiantan Award” International Jury and a Danish national director and screenwriter, was invited to interact with the teachers and students of BFA face to face, and Ms. Hanna – Director of Culture of the Danish Embassy in China and her colleagues, and Ms. Zhang Tong from the Danish Cultural Institute and her colleagues were also invited to participate.
The activity was divided into two parts: screening and on-site interaction. At 5:30pm, the feature film Pelle Erobreren (1987), directed by Mr. Bille August and co-produced byDenmarkandSweden, was presented to the teachers and students of BFA. Pelle Erobreren, a classic winning 22 international awards and the winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film Award and Palme d’Or of the Cannes Film Festival, attracted a lot of film fans, and all seats in the screening room were occupied.
After the screening, the on-site interaction started with a sincere and powerful welcoming speech of Hou Guangming - Chairman of Academy Council. After the speech, Chairman Hou announced that BFA would appoint Director Bille August to be a visiting professor and invite him to give lectures in BFA, and he also issued the visiting professor certificate to Mr. Bille August.
Later on, the on-site interaction between Mr. Bille August and the teachers and students of BFA formally started, which was presided over by Professor Hou Keming, a senior professor and doctoral supervisor of the Department of Directing. In the interaction, Mr. Bille August answered the questions about the creation of Pelle Erobreren raised by the students, such as how to adapt the original novel, how to select and direct bit players, how to communicate with the actors and actresses, how to make the film closer to life, and various problems and feelings in the shooting process. In addition, he shared his impression on the Chinese films and his unforgettable experience of cooperating with the famous Swedish director Ernst Ingmar Bergman. At last, he gave precious suggestions to the young Chinese filmmakers, and hoped that the young filmmakers could cherish their school days, make diversified attempts to create films, create films with true feelings, face their own ideas sincerely, follow their own inner voice and pay attention to people, human nature, inner world of people and fusion of man and nature in the creation process. At the end of the activity, Mr. Bille August said he looked forward to teaching in BFA.
