Lecture by master of director department—Dialogue between Dylan Ticino and Zhou Xinxia
On evening of April 24th, American famous film editor, Mr. Dylan Ticino was invited by the teacher of our department, Zhou Xinxia to give an excellent artistic lecture to all teachers and students of our school in standard video hall.
Mr. Dylan is the special editor of modern American wizard director Paul Thomas Anderson, and participated edition in various movies made by American movie master Robert Altman. His representative edition works are Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood (made by Paul Thomas Anderson), The Player, Short Cuts, Prêt-à-Porter (made by Robert Altman), Unbreakable (M. Night Shyamalan), The Royal Tenenbaums (made by Wes Anderson), Brokeback Mountain (made by Ang Lee), The Town (made by Ben Affleck), Zero Dark Thirty (made by Kathryn Bigelow), etc., in which There Will Be Blood and Zero Dark Thirty were nominated as the Academy Award for Best Film Editing.
Dylan shared his editing experience in more than 20 years with students. Dylan used excellent movie clips to interpret the move editing techniques, including dazzling multi-line narration in Magnolia, cold opening with tension in There Will Be Blood, and tolerant and pulsatile emotion in Brokeback Mountain. He also shared anecdotes of various famous movie directors with students.
During the lecture, students positively interacted with Dylan to discuss professional questions in sound pictures, narration, emotion, structure, background music, etc., and gave him warm applause in return for his incisive and interesting answers.
Finally, the famous editor, Professor Zhou Xinxia from director department expressed her thank to Mr. Dylan, and sent Interview with Top Editing Masters in Chinese. She emphasized that “editing means cutting the imperfect part and leaving the perfect part, so only good skill can ensure film editing and make film better”.
